What will happen in Belmont Stakes odds wagering this year?
Belmont odds this year will see Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird as one of the favorites. The horse won the Derby and then finished a fast closing second in the Preakness behind the filly Rachel Alexandra. Mine That Bird will be favored in Belmont odds if Rachel Alexandra does not run. One of these two horses is the likely favorite though in Belmont Stakes odds. And that is probably not good news for them in Belmont odds. Recently in Belmont odds the favorites have been a disaster. That is a huge change in Belmont Stakes odds history as favorites used to do very well. Now it is more about longshots like Da’ Tara, Birdstone and Sarava when it comes to Belmont odds.
When a horse has to go a mile and a half for the first time in their careers anything can happen in Belmont odds. What oftentimes does happen is the favorite finishes second or third in online sports betting in the Belmont Stakes. Silver Charm was right there but didn’t win the Belmont in 1997; Real Quiet was second in 1998, War Emblem was close in 2002, Funny Cide in 2003 and Smarty Jones in 2004. Curlin was right there in 2007 in Belmont odds but didn’t win.
Looking back at Belmont odds history you will find that favorites still win more than 40% of the time. That number used to be higher though as in recent years the favorites in online betting have lost in Belmont odds. Things run in streaks in online sports betting and in horse racing, and right now the streak is with the longshots in Belmont Stakes odds. Big payoffs have definitely been happening in the Belmont in recent years as Sarava was the biggest longshot winner ever in 2002 and last year Da’ Tara was a huge longshot as well and everyone remembers Birdstone in 2004.
Online betting should be popular again on Belmont odds in 2009 with Mine That Bird getting a lot of attention. Other horses from the Derby will also be on the Belmont odds board in addition to some talented newcomers including Peter Pan winner Charitable Man
