Belmont Stakes wagering has seen underdogs win almost every single year recently. Even in 2007 it was the filly Rags to Riches winning in an upset over the great Curlin in Belmont Stakes odds. Three years ago it was Jazil pulling off another big Belmont Stakes wagering win as a longshot. 2005 was a rare win for the favorite in Belmont Stakes odds as Afleet Alex won easily.

It was Empire Maker winning in Belmont Stakes wagering in 2003. That win was even an upset since Funny Cide was the favorite in Belmont Stakes odds.
Going back seven years we see that Sarava won the 2002 Belmont as the biggest underdog ever at odds of 70-1. Eight years ago it was the favored Point Given winning for horse racing fans. Underdogs have been the way to go recently in the Belmont but that has not always been the case. Early years of the Belmont saw the favorite win more than half the time. In fact, even with the underdogs winning a lot recently, favorites have still won more than 40% of the time in the Belmont.
The 2009 Belmont Stakes will likely have Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird as the favorite. Whether he can break the recent string of upsets in the Belmont remains to be seen and he will definitely be tested with as many as 12 horses in the race.<
