The AMP Energy 500 is one of four restrictor plate races which mean a lot of crashes, exciting finishes and unpredictable odds for those that bet on NASCAR.
NASCAR betting last year saw Tony Stewart win this race on a green-white-checker finish. Two years ago in NASCAR betting it was Jeff Gordon winning this race while Brian Vickers won in 2006. Dale Jarrett was the 2005 NASCAR betting winner of this race while Dale Earnhardt Jr. won in 2001, 2002 and in 2004 with Michael Waltrip the winner in 2003.
Last year the NASCAR betting in this race was exciting with 64 lead changes among 28 leaders. There were two accidents, one a big 10-car crash that took a lot of good cars out of the running. That is the problem with restrictor plate racing. There are great NASCAR betting finishes but too many times the best cars get caught in crashes.
Normally in restrictor plate racing you would look to Dale Earnhardt Jr. as a favorite in NASCAR betting at the sportsbook. That is not the case this year though as Jr. has been a bust. It has gotten so bad that Jr. is not even looking forward to finishing the season as those that bet on NASCAR see. “It’s really encouraging one day and then the next day it’s equally discouraging. That’s getting really old,” Earnhardt said. “I’m at the end of my rope. I’ve been riding it out, but there comes a point where you don’t want to ride it out any more. I’ve just had enough. It’s been a long year.”
Earnhardt Jr. did not make the Chase for the Sprint Cup and is well back in points this NASCAR betting season. Talladega has made a change in the size of the restrictor plates for this week’s NASCAR betting race and Earnhardt was not happy about the change to a smaller plate. “You all know what sells tickets. I don’t want to be flipping across the start/finish line every week,” he said. Jr. has won in NASCAR betting at Talladega a total of five times and was second in the spring, his best finish of the 2009 bet on NASCAR season. He will not be the NASCAR betting favorite in this race at the sportsbook as that role goes to Jimmie Johnson with Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart not far behind.
